Climate Leaders

Climate Leaders is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies. Partners set a corporate-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goal and inventory their emissions to measure progress. By reporting inventory data to EPA, Partners create a lasting record of their accomplishments. Partners also identify themselves as corporate environmental leaders and strategically position themselves as climate change policy continues to unfold.

The goal of Climate Leaders is to aid companies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Since its inception in 2002, Climate Leaders has grown to include nearly 100 corporations whose revenues add up to almost 10 percent of the United States' gross domestic product and U.S. emissions represent nearly 10 percent of total U.S. GHG emissions.

Several companies have been successful in meeting their GHG reduction goals:

-Baxter International Inc. met its goal to reduce U.S. GHG emissions by 16 percent per unit of production value by 2005.
-General Motors Corporation met its goal to reduce U.S. GHG emissions by 10 percent by 2005.
-IBM Corporation met its goal to reduce average annual CO2 emissions associated with global energy use by 4 percent by 2005. In addition, IBM Corporation also met its goal to reduce perfluorocompound (PFC) emissions from semiconductor manufacturing processes by 10 percent by 2005.
-National Renewable Energy Laboratory met its goal to reduce U.S. GHG emissions by 10 percent per square foot by 2005.
-SC Johnson met its goal to reduce U.S. GHG emissions by 10 percent per pound of product by 2005.
