Car Heaven

An Effective Practice

Description

The Car Heaven program was developed in July 2000 in order to accelerate the retirement of old, higher-polluting vehicles from Canada's roads. The program promotes a shift to new, cleaner, and more efficient technologies. The program offers car donors the free tow of their retired vehicle, a charitable receipt from a charity of their choice, and the guarantee that their old vehicle will be recycles in an environmentally responsible way. The retirement of old vehicles results in the reduction of greenhouses gases, carbon monoxide, and smog-causing emissions. In addition, Car Heaven recycles vehicles using environmentally-sound methods and ensures that the air, water and land are not polluted in the process.

Goal / Mission

The Car Heaven program aims to help Canadians reduce their personal impact on the environment by providing car retirement services for their old, higher-polluting vehicles.

Results / Accomplishments

Since its inception, the Car Heaven program has retired over 88,800 old vehicles. The retirement of these old, higher-polluting vehicles has resulted in the reduction of 45,922 tons of carbon monoxide and 4,778 tons of smog-forming emissions. In addition, Car Heaven has raised over $3 million for charities across Canada.
