Business Case for Breastfeeding

An Evidence-Based Practice

Description

The Business Case for Breastfeeding is a comprehensive program developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the HHS Office on Women’s Health. The initiative is designed to educate employers about the value of supporting breastfeeding employees in the workplace. The program highlights how such support contributes to the success of the entire business. Numerous tools have been developed for businesses by HHS and the Kansas Business Case for Breastfeeding (KS BCFB) program to help employers provide support and privacy for breastfeeding employees to pump during the workday. Investing in breastfeeding employee support services has proven to produce a 3 to 1 ROI through greater employee retention, increased productivity, lower health care costs and decreased sick days.

The program also offers guidance to employees on balancing breastfeeding and working. The KS BCFB resources are designed to help community partners and health professionals educate employees and business in their communities.

The KS BCFB program is committed to assisting employers to support their breastfeeding employees. Please contact us if you are an employer who would like free assistance with drafting a short policy, setting up a lactation room, or just have questions about complying with the relevant laws. Please contact if you are a breastfeeding employee or someone who supports families to learn more about the relevant laws and strategies for balancing work and breastfeeding.
